Mathematics Interactive Learning Environment (MILE)

Georgia State University's Department of Mathematics and Statistics houses two Mathematics Interative Learning Environments:

The Urban Life MILE is located in room 301 of the Urban Life Building (66 Courtland Street SE, Atlanta, GA 30303) and currently supports Math1111-College Algebra and Math1113-Precalculus.

The Commons MILE is located at the University Commons (141 Piedmont Ave., Atlanta, GA 30303) and currently supports Math1070-Elementary Statistics.

These state-of-the-art labs are an extension of the classroom environment. Students spend 50 minutes per week in a separately designated classroom and the remainder of the course requirement hours for the week are spent in the MILE. In this way, classroom instruction is extended to an environment where the benefit is from hands-on learning and one-on-one assistance. This method of course delivery offers much more than what is typically available in a traditional classroom. Students work, individually, on homework assignments (for which they have an UNLIMITED number of attempts) or quizzes (for which they have 3 attempts) and have access to immediate assistance from instructors, departmental graduate students and undergraduate assistants. As an added benefit, review sessions are scheduled before each exam/test giving students a chance to review concepts and to clear any lingering questions. The goal of the MILE staff is to assist students in learning the course material while, simultaneously, allowing them to maintain their independence as learners.

In addition, if students do not complete their homework assignments or quizzes during required weekly times in the MILE, they have continued access to Pearson's online software, MyMathLab, through which their course content is delivered. Homework assignments, quizzes and self-study can be continued in any environment with internet accessibility. MyMathLab includes a variety of multimedia resources such as video clips, audio clips and animations.
